Layout & Furniture

A floor plan tells you the shape of the rooms, where the doors and windows sit relative to each other, and how someone would actually move through the space — all before a single viewing. Feng shui reads a plan for door alignment, missing corners, room function against room position, and where light and air … Read more

Some layout problems can be addressed by moving furniture, screening a sightline, or changing a habit — a desk with its back to a door, a bed under a beam that can be shifted a foot. Others are structural: a north-facing block of flats, a fixed staircase, a shared house you cannot renovate. Feng shui … Read more

In the commanding position principle used in Form School and carried into the Western Black Sect (BTB) adaptation, a bed should be placed so the sleeper can see the bedroom door without lying directly in its path. “Facing the door” means having a clear diagonal view of it, not sleeping with the feet pointed straight … Read more

In a shared house, feng shui works at two separate scales, not one. The private bedroom can be arranged fully, the way any single-occupant room is treated in the tradition. The communal areas — hallway, kitchen, living room, bathroom — belong to everyone, and no single housemate can apply a full bagua overlay or move … Read more

No, it is not a problem in the sense of causing harm — but it does mean one common piece of feng shui advice, the “commanding position,” cannot be satisfied, and the tradition offers workarounds rather than treating a fixed bed as a dead end. Feng shui traditions generally advise against storing things under the bed, on the reasoning that it blocks the free movement of chi (qi) around a sleeping body. The concern is strongest in the BTB adaptation; classical Form School and Compass School texts say less about it directly and focus more on airflow and what is … Read more

Seating works best arranged in a loose semicircle or square facing the fireplace, with no chair backing directly onto it and at least one seat still able to see the room’s entrance. The fireplace acts as a secondary focal point; the door remains the point the room is organised around first. This is a case … Read more

Feng shui treats furniture height mainly as a question of sightlines and proportion: pieces that let a seated or lying person see the door and the room are favoured over pieces that block the view or tower over the body. The reasoning is about visibility and a sense of scale, not about a fixed number … Read more

Arrange it as two rooms sharing one floor, not one room with two purposes. Give each function its own zone, its own furniture anchor, and a clear boundary between them — a shelf, a rug edge, a change in lighting — so a person occupies one identity at a time instead of sitting in a … Read more

A long narrow room is best arranged by breaking its length into two or more zones rather than lining furniture up along the walls in a single row. The goal, in Form School terms, is to slow down chi that would otherwise rush straight from one end to the other, and to give the eye … Read more
